Use of sanitizer for handwashing can be detrimental
The use of sanitizers for washing hands can be detrimental to health.
The warning surfaced in a medical study in the United States.
According to research by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the use of this fluid for children may be harmful.
The study reports that there have been several cases in which the use of this liquid soap has resulted in the recording of eye irritation, vomiting and abdominal pain in children.
The study found that 70,000 calls were made to helplines for such complaints in children under the age of twelve from 2011 to 2014.
In five cases the children went into a coma while in two cases their breathing was stopped temporarily.
In 91% of cases, children were five years of age or younger, and researchers thought they might have drank the flu.
However, this is not accidentally possible in children aged 6 to 12 and it is likely that they used hand sanitizer incorrectly.
Researchers say children should not use this fluid, but use soap.
