Top 10 countries most affected by terrorism in 2019

According to the ‘Global Terrorism Index’ of 2019, the death toll in terrorist attacks in Pakistan last year was 81% lower than in 2013. According to this index, these are the most affected countries in the world.

1. Afghanistan
Afghanistan has been on the list this year among the countries affected by terrorism worldwide. During 2018, there were 1443 terrorist incidents in Afghanistan, killing 7379 people and injuring 6,500. 83% of the casualties were due to attacks by the Taliban. The Taliban targeted police, civilians and government offices. The terrorist activities of ISIS Khurasan also increased. Afghanistan’s GTI score was 9.60.
2. Iraq
Iraq has been ranked second after the list of terrorist countries for 13 consecutive years. According to this year’s Global Terrorism Index, Iraq reported 1131 terrorist incidents in 2018, down 57 percent from the previous year. Compared to last year, casualties were reduced by 75%. The terrorist organization Daesh has carried out most terrorist acts. Iraq’s GTI score was 9.24.
3. Nigeria
Nigeria is third on the list of countries affected by terrorism, with a GTI score of 8.59. More than 2,000 people were killed and 772 injured in 562 terrorist attacks in this African country. More than 22,000 people have been killed in Nigeria since 2001 since terrorism.
4. Syria 
According to the GTI Index, the civil war-torn country ranks fourth in the list of countries affected by terrorism. Most of the terrorist activities in Syria involved ISIS, Hayat al-Sham and extremists of the Kurdistan Workers Party. In Syria, 131 terrorist incidents occurred in 2018, killing 662 people and injuring more than 700. Evening score in the GTI Index was 8.0.
5. Pakistan
Pakistan ranks fifth on the list where 537 people were killed and more than a thousand were injured in 366 terrorist incidents last year. Last year, most acts of terrorism were carried out by ISIS Khurasan and the TTP. According to the report, the number of deaths due to terrorism in Pakistan was 81% lower than in 2013.
6. Somalia
Somalia ranks sixth in the list of countries affected by terrorism, where terrorists belonging to the Al-Shabaab organization account for more than 90 percent of attacks. Somalia recorded 286 terrorist incidents, killing 646 people. Evening score in the GTI Index was 7.8.
7. India
India fell from eighth to seventh in the global index this year. In India, 350 people were killed and 540 were injured in around 700 incidents of terrorism. Most of the terrorist activities in the eastern part of India were carried out by the Maoists.
8. Yemen
In addition to the ongoing war against Yemeni armed groups and the Saudi-led Houthis, the country faces terrorist attacks. In total, 227 terrorist incidents have killed 301 people. Al-Qaeda affiliate AQAP terrorists were involved in the terrorist attacks, besides Houthi extremists. However, the number of deaths due to terrorism in Yemen was 81% lower than in 2015.
9 Philippines
The Philippines was ranked ninth were 424 terrorist incidents occurred in 2018, killing nearly 300 civilians. More than three thousand people have died in the Philippines since 2001. The Philippines score was 7.14 in the GTI Index this year.
10. Republic of the Congo
The Democratic Republic of the Congo was ranked 10th in the latest index, with an eighteen percent increase in terrorist attacks by Allied Democratic forces and other groups. The attacks of these groups mostly targeted civilians.
